Diabetes is a disease which needs permanent care. People with type 2 diabetes need to take care of their feet. Type two diabetes can cause a condition called neuropathy which is a nerve damaging disorder. Therefore, you may have reduced or no sensation in your feet even when you hurt or cut your feet. This increases the chances of an infection to set in. This condition also causes reduced blood circulation, making it tough to treat infections. As a result gangrene may set in and become a threat to the patient’s life. Other form of complications of foot for diabetes patients are dermatitis and fungal infections. They may even suffer from led ulcers.

So how can we check such complications of the foot? Following a few simple tips will help a lot.

1. You should check your feet every day. Since it is tough for diabetes patients to feel cuts, injuries and sores, therefore, you must inspect your feet for any injuries daily. You should check places like backs of heels, sides of feet, between your toes and bottom of your feet. You should seek help from a family member to help in this task. But it must be carried out without fail.

2. Keep your feet clean. Wash them with soap and water and dry them well. Cleaning your feet daily will help you in early detection of injuries. This will also help wash away any tiny irritants which may bring harm to the feet. However, you should not soak your feet. Soaking will make the skin or debris that might have been picked up on the soles of your feet. It’s not recommended to soak your feet frail and injury prone. You may use lotion on feet avoiding the spaces between the toes.

3. You should wear well fitting but soft socks. Your shoes should also fit you well and should have adequate cushion for support. Avoid shoes which are too loose or too tight. This may cause sores on the feet. Never roam about barefoot.

4. Visit a doctor regularly for a check up of your feet. You should consult a doctor for the smallest open sores or infected areas on your feet. It is always better to cure the problem before it becomes too big. The doctor should also check your feet and legs for adequate blood circulation and any possible problems.

5. Keep a tab on your diabetes level. One should try to keep the sugar level closest to normal. Maintain a healthy lifestyle and conduct regular check ups for blood sugar levels.
